With the kick off of the Masters tournament this week, I'm thinking about golf - in spite of the chilly and raw early spring weather here on-island! For those that aren't familiar with golf options available here, below are some details on the two 18 hole and three 9 hole courses on Martha's Vineyard.
VINEYARD GOLF CLUB
A private 18 hole facility, Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown is the newest of the courses on-island. Originally designed by Donald Steele, the golf course was recently redesigned and re-routed by Gil Hanse - changing the course from a difficult, punishing course with long rough and deep pot-bunkers to a more friendly and fun layout with large sand waste areas and a feel more like that of a Pinehurst or Pine Valley. Below are some before and after photos I was lucky enough to take over the years.
FARM NECK GOLF CLUB
Located in Oak Bluffs, Farm Neck was a favorite of President Clinton, during his visits to the Vineyard in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The course was built in 1979 and includes a number of high end homes surrounding the club, which is semi-private and allows limited public play in the summer. With 18 holes and a beautiful facility, Farm Neck is a joy to visit and includes great water views on many of its challenging holes. A variety of images are below.
MINK MEADOWS GOLF CLUB
A 9 hole course, Mink Meadows is a fun place to play in the West Chop neighborhood of Vineyard Haven. The course loops in nearly a square path around a cluster of homes in the neighborhood, which also enjoy a private beach on Vineyard Sound. A couple images are below.
EDGARTOWN GOLF CLUB
Another 9 hole course, this one a private club, Edgartown Golf Club is a fun course with very small greens and tough short game areas. Description of the course from edgartowngolfclub.com is below:
"The Edgartown Golf Club, founded in 1926, is a private golf club located in Edgartown, Massachusetts on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Known for breathtaking views of the Vineyard Sound and its historic and charming club house, the Edgartown Golf Club is open to its members and their guests year round, weather permitting. During the summer season it hosts a junior golf program as well as many annual benefit golf tournaments that are open to all."
ROYAL AND ANCIENT LINKS OF CHAPPAQUIDDICK
Perhaps the most colorful of all the golf courses on Martha's Vineyard, the Chappy golf course include seven par 3's of varying length and two par 4's, one at 195 yards and the other approx 290. According to club pages the course was established in 1887 and in current days the club hosts a variety of events, including night golf. Fun course and great scenery.
